Marketing Technology Gives Birth to New Clusters

On a recent September Friday, a review of the job postings for just five midsize Massachusetts software companies turned up 133 job postings, ranging from intern to director of information security and vice president of sales.
All of the companies were part of an emerging cluster that is spreading throughout the state — marketing software.
The companies provide the software and services that enable corporate marketers to better brand their products and reach out to potential customers by leveraging analytics — and the fact that many people are online nearly all the time. Coming out of a recession during which companies were happy to avoid laying staff off, the sector’s growth presents a challenge for these companies: finding enough talent.
“I really think marketing is the next new economy for Massachusetts, and we are creating this cluster of businesses that can give us our next spurt of hiring growth,” said Gail Goodman, CEO of Waltham email marketing firm Constant Contact Inc. (Nasdaq: CTCT).
